Out-bound 2012/2013 - Nicola Jones - France

I’m Nicola Jones, a high school student from Halifax. As a grade twelve student, this past year has been important in deciding what to do with my life, or at least with my next year. For the longest time, I had University vs. Exchange written on my whiteboard, staring at me before I went to bed, when I woke up and as I did homework. After finally acting on it, I applied for the Rotary Youth Exchange and, within the week, I was accepted. And just last week, I found out that I will be staying in France, my top choice. During my exchange, I hope to learn lots about the language and culture, as well as form friendships to last a lifetime. Honestly, I don’t know what to expect - I just can’t wait for the experience to begin.

In-bound 2011/2012 - Natalia Lessa - Brazil

Hi, my name is Natalia Santos Lessa, I’m a Rotary Exchange Student from Brazil. I decided to do an exchange program about a year ago and that was when I heard about Rotary Youth Exchange. I`ve been here in Canada for 6 months, and it has been already such a great experience! I`ve learned lots of things during this first part of my exchange like a new culture, how to take care of myself without my parents, to be responsible, a new language... I also met awesome people here: Canadians and others exchange students for all over the world. An exchange program is a really fun way to learn so many things that you would never forget!! I’m having such an amazing time here! I`ll never forget it!

Out-bound 2011/2012 - Shannon O'Toole - France

I've always wanted to be a foreign exchange student probably since I was thirteen years old. I'd been trying for years to convince my mother and find a reasonable program to do an exchange with. When I heard about the Rotary Exchange from my cousin Sam Tate, who also did an exchange to Spain with the Rotary Club. Rotary has been amazing. It is the most inexpensive, fun and parental comforting program out there. It has been so far the best decision of my short life.
So far I've learned that I can endure a lot. There has been some times when I really wanted to be with my family and friends, or be in my own house, or not go out and meet new people or do new things. But by forcing myself to push through uncomfortable situations or trying new experiences I've become a more confident and understanding person.

Out-bound 2010/2011 - Laura Tucker - France

My name is Laura Tucker, I was an Rotary Exchange Student in 2010 and 2011 in France. Being an exchange student is the best thing you will ever do. I had the best year of my life and I’m only 20! I left for France after graduating from high school. I learnt a new language, a new culture and I had the opportunity to travel to nine other countries while I was on exchange. I also met the most amazing people that I will never forget. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience that nothing will ever compare to.

In-bound 2008/2009 - Anne-Claire Corman - Belgium

Hello everybody, my name is Anne-Claire Corman and I’m from Belgium. I live in Herve, it’s about twenty minutes by car from Liège and one and a half hours from Brussels.  I went to Halifax, in Canada in 2008-2009 with the Rotary Club of Herve, and I was hosted by the Rotary Club of Halifax Harbourside.  It was a beautiful year because I met a lot of nice people, I experienced so many good moments: like creating special bonds with my host families, my friends and the Rotary club.  I found it interesting to see and experience how people live in another country, and different cultures than my own. I tried many new foods, lived in a new city, attended a new school, and created a new life. I always remember three sentences in a speach of a rotarian : « it’s not bad, it’s not good, it’s just different ! ». And I found that to be very true.  This year abroad has made me more independent, more autonomous, more mature, more cunning,… and gave me the desire to travel all around the world. This experience will be in my heart forever.
