Hospice Halifax is establishing the first free-standing residential hospice in Nova Scotia, with the aim of supporting people affected by life-limiting illness, death, grief or loss. Hospice care is specialized end-of-life care and support for individuals and their friends and family, provided in a more home-like setting.

Rotary Club of Halifax Harbourside, together with the other Rotary Clubs in metro Halifax, is a long term partner of Hospice Halifax – providing direct funding and helping to secure other funds, as well as providing volunteer support. For example:

1)   Metro Rotary Clubs are currently providing direct funding of $50,000 per year for 3 years (this year and 2 more years) to aid in the establishment of the first hospice in Halifax.

2)   Rotary Club of Halifax Harbourside is well-represented in Halifax’s 100 Men Who Give A Damn! organization, and Derek Brett’s nomination of Hospice Halifax followed by a terrific presentation by Hospice Halifax’s ED Wendy Fraser led to 100 Men  awarding Hospice Halifax $25,400 as their Q1 2015 funding recipient.

3)  Rotary Club of Halifax Harbourside member Michael Speraw serves on Hospice Halifax’s board as Treasurer and numerous Rotarians volunteer for Hospice Halifax regularly.

A significant milestone has been met, with Hospice Halifax announcing that Halifax’s first residential palliative care hospice will be built in the south end of Halifax, at 618/620 Francklyn Street.  The 10-bed, 2-storey residential hospice is scheduled to open in 2017, retaining the history and warmth of the original houses.
