Club Mtg: Introducing...Maya Sloan
Aug 16, 2019 7:15 AM – 8:30 AM

Maya Sloan is a new member of Halifax Harbourside Rotary, so she will share some things about herself in her introduction talk.

Maya is a counselling therapist and speech language pathologist. Maya grew up in Germany where she completed speech therapy training at university hospital in Aachen. In 1994, she moved to England where she completed a Master of Science Degree in Human Communication and specialized in stuttering. Maya came to Nova Scotia in 2003 with her young family and began working in the Halifax Regional School Board. Then, in 2010, she completed a Master Program in Counselling at Acadia University in 2010.

Maya is also a long time mindfulness practitioner.

Maya left HRSB to establish herself as a play therapist, speech therapist for stuttering, dyslexia tutor and family and individual therapist.

Joining Rotary was a step toward thinking more about society and caring beyond professional and spiritual circles. Maya is also interested in developing more of a public persona, which we hope the club can help her with.

Joint Rotaract-Rotary Meeting
Aug 28, 2019 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM

Halifax Rotaract and Halifax Harbourside Rotary are holding a joint meeting. Our objective is to share a brief rundown of our plans for this year, so we can decide how best to help each other.

The meeting will take place in the Student Union Building room 302 on the Dalhousie campus, 6136 University Ave. Parking in the lot beside Le Merchant Place (next to the sports field) is free after 4:30. Access the lot from South Street.

Meeting starts at 6:30 and will run until 7:30 or 8. We are still working on the presentation; I suspect that it will be around 30 minutes, leaving some time for discussion afterwards.

Food is available at the University Club, next to the sports field. (The Grawood isn't open in the summer.) After the meeting, we may continue over a few adult beverages (at the University club?).

More information to follow closer to the date.

Club Mtg: Louisa Horne, Move the Needle
Sep 06, 2019 7:15 AM – 8:30 AM

Louisa Horne has been a member of RCHH since 2006 and is a Past President of the club. She now serves as the Chair of the Rotary Leadership Team for our district (NS, PEI, NL and St.-Pierre-et-Miquelon). Louisa is a Management Consultant, Entrepreneur and Educator and has facilitated workshops at International Rotary Conferences in Toronto and Hamburg.

One of the usual tasks of a Chair of the District Leadership Team (aka: District Governor) is to visit and present to each Rotary club in the district. Louisa is doing this by way of a video that introduces the International President, RI CEO, our Director and the district team – along with several challenges for us to consider this year that will help us “move the needle”.  In most cases, Area Governors are facilitating the video and questions, but in our case, Louisa will be at the meeting to answer questions about the challenges and discuss needles we want to move.
