ShelterBox Canada - What It Is
ShelterBox is made up of people who believe in shelter as a human right – that shelter from the chaos of disaster and conflict is vital. No ifs. No buts.

When people are plunged into crisis, normality is suspended. But good, quality shelter can cut through the chaos. This is why it provides the tools that enable people to rebuild homes and transform their lives.

ShelterBox Canada is a registered charity that has been a part of the global ShelterBox network since 2010. Rotary International and ShelterBox are collaborating partners. The fundraising efforts of Canadian Rotary Clubs and individuals makes up about 50% of the funds raised by ShelterBox Canada. Additionally Rotary Clubs around the world provide valuable logistical support to the field operations. Typically it is Rotarians who are the first point of contact for the ShelterBox Special Response Teams (SRTs). There are ten Canadian SRT members who work tirelessly with the rest of the International Response Team to deliver aid to families who need it around the world. It has a team of over 120 volunteers across the country who share their passion with ShelterBox and help it raise awareness and fundraise across the country. Many of these volunteers are Rotarians.

It puts families first. The commitment of its supporters enables it to provide emergency shelter and tools for families robbed of their homes by conflict and natural disaster.

It does not believe that one size fits all. It works hard to understand the impact of each emergency and the need this creates within individual communities. The equipment it provides, whatever shape it takes, gives people the hope and the power to transform their own lives. It tests and evaluates all of the aid it provides by talking to, and learning from, the families who use it. This fuels it to be innovative and to continue evolving.

The Rotary Club of Halifax Harbourside has been a supporter of ShelterBox Canada since 2008 and the Club has provided annual support in the range of US$1,000 – 3,000 each year. Individual Rotarians have also made donations.
